The Real World Questions Competition

  1. Promoter: The University of Law Limited (Company Number 07933838), of 2 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8HQ (known as “ULaw” or “we” or “us” in these terms and conditions).

2. The Competition: 

2.1 The Real World Questions competition (“the Competition”) is a competition for eligible entrants (please see clause 5) who are students at an educational institution in Years 10-13, to submit an essay in response to one of the following three questions:

  1. Does the world need more entrepreneurs? (Business question);
  2. Will stop and search protect or polarise our society? (Policing and Criminology question);
  3. How is Mental Health protected by the Law and is it enough? (Law question).

The entries will be shortlisted and then judged by a panel of diverse judges (as defined at paragraph 7.3).

3. Competition Period: 

3.1 Eligible Entrants may enter the Competition between 00.01 GMT on 20th June 2022 (“Opening Date”) and 11:59 GMT on 18th September 2022 (“Closing Date”).

4. The Prizes:

4.1 The prizes (“Prize” or “Prizes”) are as follows: 

4.1.1 The Prizes for the Law Essay will be:

  • £1000 cash Prize for the overall winner 
  • £1000 cash Prize for the overall winner’s educational institution
  • A week’s work experience with the Co-op’s legal team, and a place on an exclusive Insight Day at Clyde & Co (plus £50 per day for travel expenses if required to travel)
  • Two hour session with Employability Director, John Watkins on employability
  • A Windows 10 laptop

4.1.2 The prize for the Business essay will be:

  • £1000 cash Prize for the overall winner
  • £1000 cash Prize for the overall winner’s educational institution
  • An exclusive workshop with PwC recruiters on how to succeed in the selection process (plus £50 per day for travel expenses if required to travel) 
  • Work experience- details will be made available on https://realworldquestions.com/prizes/ by 11th September 2022 (subject to availability) 
  • Two hour session with Employability Director, John Watkins on employability
  • A Windows 10 laptop

4.1.3 The prize for the Policing and Criminology essay will be:

  • £1000 cash Prize for the overall winner
  • £1000 cash Prize for the overall winner’s educational institution 
  • A virtual CSI experience and a careers conversation with Steve Gaskin, a former Scotland Yard detective and advisor to the Silent Witness TV show and now owner of The Crime Lab
  • Two hour session with Employability Director, John Watkins on employability
  • A Windows 10  laptop

4.1.4 The six runners up (two runners up from each category) will receive:

  • A Windows 10 laptop each.
  1. The prizes are non-transferable and non-exchangeable.
  2. There is no cash equivalent for non-cash Prizes  
  3. The cash Prizes will be paid to the Winners’ bank accounts by bank transfer. The Winners’ bank account details must be provided to ULaw upon request.
  4. Preferred dates for work experience and employability sessions will be arranged on the basis of feasibility, mutual convenience and any prevailing public health and safety (including  COVID- related) measures (if any).  Arrangements may be delayed due to safety considerations, and work from home experience may also be offered.
  5. In the event of unforeseen circumstances ULaw reserves the right to substitute the Prizes for an alternative of equal or greater value.

5. Eligibility: 

5.1 This Competition is open to residents of England, Scotland and Wales currently attending school, sixth form, or college in the school years 10 through 13 as long as clause 5.2 does not apply to them (“Entrants”).

5.2 The Competition is not open to:

  1. ULaw employees, their families, or agents, businesses or anyone else professionally connected with this Competition;  
  2. anyone attending a university; or 
  3. anyone in employment. 

5.3 ULaw reserves the right to verify the eligibility of Entrants. Entrants may be expected to prove their education status and age to verify they are currently attending school, sixth form or college. ULaw may require such information as it considers reasonably necessary for this purpose and a Prize or Prizes may be withheld unless and until ULaw is satisfied with the verification. 

5.4 In entering the Competition the Entrant confirms that they are eligible to do so and eligible to claim the Prize. ULaw may require the Entrant to provide proof that they are eligible to enter the Competition.

5.5 ULaw will not accept Competition entries that are:

  1. automatically generated by computer;
  2. altered, reconstructed, forged or tampered with; or
  3. contain offensive words, signs or behaviour.

5.6 ULaw reserves all rights to disqualify Entrants if their conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the Competition.

5.7 ULaw reserves the right to disqualify any Entrant it reasonably believes is attempting to fraudulently enter, cheat, or compromise the system either by technical means (e.g. scripting or automation), or manual means (e.g. creation of multiple accounts per entrant), or by plagiarism of submitted work.

6. How To Enter: 

6.1 All entries must be received by the Closing Date.  All Competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified.

6.2 Entrants must input and submit their details via the online form available at https://realworldquestions.com/entry/  and upload their essay answering one of the three essay  questions as per clause 2 above.  

6.3 Entrants under the age of 16, must obtain written parental or guardian consent to enter and if they win claim their Prize. This must be done via the form on the Entry page of the competition website.  ULaw may ask Winners to provide proof of age.

6.4 Essays must be between 1000 and 1500 words in length, in Microsoft Word format, with a file size under 2MB.  

6.5 Submissions must be the Entrants’ own work, plagiarism checks may be applied. 

6.6 Entrants may not submit multiple entries per person, one entry is permitted per person.  Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed. 

6.7 There is no cost to enter the Competition. Entries must be made online and internet access is required.

6.8 By entering this Competition, all Entrants will be deemed to have accepted and be bound by these terms and conditions.

7. Winner Selection

7.1 The Competition entries will be shortlisted by an external agency ‘The Competition Agency’ based on the following criteria which have been agreed by a Panel (as defined at paragraph 7.3) comprising of ULaw and other judges including an independent judge (“Criteria”):

i- An argument or arguments clearly articulated and supported by evidence.

ii- The quality and quantity of academic sources and referencing.

iii- A novel or thought-provoking approach to the question.

iv- A high standard of spelling and grammar.

v- An engaging writing style.

7.2 The four entries that have the highest average scores rated on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the highest) will be shortlisted and put forward to the Panel to be judged. 

7.3 Entrants will be judged by a panel of judges from within The University of Law, from the Co-op, an independent judge and the external organisations listed at https://realworldquestions.com/judges (“the Panel”) on the basis of the Criteria. 

7.4 The Panel will also score the entries against the Criteria. 

7.5 One winner and two runners up (“Winners”) will be selected from the five shortlisted entries per essay category, based on the Panel’s decision. The Panel will select winners and runners up based on the average scores allocated by the Panel. In the event of a tie, the essays will be re-marked by judges from the Panel. The judges will also provide feedback to shortlisted Entrants on their essay.  

  1. Winner Notification 

8.1  The Winners will be contacted via the email address entered in their online form within 90 days of the Closing Date .  The Winners will be required to respond to accept the prize by return of email and provide any requested details within 7 days of initial contact.  

8.2 If the chosen Winners of the prizes refuse their prize or fail to respond after 7 days, new Winners will be contacted, based on the next best scoring essay.

8.3 ULaw’s decisions are binding in all matters relating to this Competition, and no correspondence shall be entered into.

8.4 The surnames of Winners are available on request by emailing [email protected] 60 days after Closing Date. If you enter into this Competition but would object to any or all of your name being published or made available, please contact ULaw at [email protected]. In such circumstances, ULaw must still provide your details and winning entry to the Advertising Standards Authority on request.

8.5 In order to allow Winners to claim their Prize, Entrants will be required to provide personal information.  Delay or refusal to provide relevant information may affect the delivery of the Prize(s) to the Winners.

  1. Limitation of Liability

9.1 Insofar as is permitted by law, ULaw, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible for compensating any Entrant or accepting any responsibility for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the Prize or entering the Competition except where it is caused by the negligence of ULaw, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

  1. Ownership of Competition Entries and Intellectual Property Rights 

10.1 In entering the Competition Entrants confirm that the ideas in their entry are their own original work, are not defamatory and do not infringe third-party rights.

10.2 Entrants agree that ULaw may, but is not required to, make their entry available on its website and any other media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the Competition. Entrants agree to grant ULaw a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence, for the full period of any intellectual property rights in their submitted essay to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the submitted essay for such purposes.

  1. Data Protection and Publicity 

11.1 If a Winner of the Competition is 18 or over 18 years of age, they consent to the use of their name and image in any University publicity material.  Any personal data relating to the Winner or any other Entrants will be used solely in accordance with current UK data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without prior consent.  For any Winners under the age of 18, written parental/guardian consent will be requested via an online form to use their name and image in any publicity material. 

11.2 Ulaw will only process Entrants’ personal information as set out in ULaw’s Privacy Policy available at  https://www.law.ac.uk/globalassets/13.-media–doc-repo/08.-policies/pdf_policies_privacy-policy.pdf

  1. General

12.1 No responsibility is accepted for entries lost, damaged or delayed or as a result of any network, computer hardware or software failure of any kind. Proof of sending will not be accepted as proof of receipt.

12.2 The Promoter cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss or injury suffered by any Entrant entering the Competition or as a result of accepting or participating in a Prize. Nothing shall exclude the Promoter’s liability for death or personal injury as a result of its negligence.

12.2 If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, ULaw may, at its sole discretion, exclude or disqualify an Entrant from the Competition. 

12.3 If an act, omission, event or circumstance occurs which is beyond the reasonable control of ULaw and which prevents ULaw from complying with these terms and conditions ULaw will not be liable for any failure to perform or delay in performing its obligation.

12.4 ULaw reserves the right to cancel or amend the Competition, or these terms and conditions, at any time without notice if circumstances arise outside of its control. 

12.5 The terms and conditions of this Competition shall be governed by English law and are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
